Mariann was 42 years old when she experienced acute glaucoma for the first time – an intense and extremely painful event in the eye.

John (76) from Bergen lives an active retirement life with diagnosed normal-tension glaucoma. After surgeries on both eyes, he has good visual function and an optimistic outlook on the future. With a background as an engineer and business owner, he is now involved in volunteer work, the local history society, the Bergen Council for the Elderly, and works as a city guide.
Behind the eyes - Anne
Anne Synnøve (57) was diagnosed with glaucoma in 2014 and has since undergone nine surgeries and several laser treatments. After a challenging start, her vision has stabilized, thanks in part to a valve in her left eye. She manages the condition well, but the fear of losing her driver’s license – and with it the opportunity to drive a trailer during the summer – worries her.

Despite severe vision loss and a series of surgeries, Ragnhild has found her own ways to live an active and meaningful life. With assistive devices, audiobooks, exercise, walks, and her white cane, she maintains her daily routines. As a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother — with a daughter who also has glaucoma — she is deeply familiar with both the challenges and the sense of mastery that come with living with vision loss.

Hanne was born with glaucoma and has lived with vision that varies from day to day. After many years of treatment and a demanding working life as a nurse, she finally gained access to rehabilitation and support that made a major difference. Today, she works from home with social media, runs an online shop, and speaks openly about what it takes to create a life that works with glaucoma.
